Your estimate

Net cost of ownership...
Cost per working day...
Cost per year of ownership...
Resale value recovered...

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

A desk priced like a used car invites a reasonable question: what does it actually cost to sit at it? The sticker price is only the opening number. White-glove delivery, occasional motor service or refinishing, and the resale value a well-made piece retains all change what the desk really costs across a decade of use. Buyers tend to compare list prices when they should be comparing cost per working day.

The calculator adds the purchase price to delivery and installation, adds your expected annual upkeep for every year you keep the desk, then subtracts the resale value you expect to recover at the end. That net figure is divided by the total number of working days across your ownership period. Every number is yours to change and none of them are hidden. Treat the result as a planning estimate rather than an appraisal; real resale values depend on the maker, the condition and the market on the day you sell.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the desk price and any separately quoted delivery or installation charge.
  2. Set how many years you expect to keep the desk and how many days a year you will work at it.
  3. Adjust the resale share and annual upkeep, then read the net cost and the cost per working day.

What the math assumes

  • Assumes the desk is bought outright; financing interest, sales tax and any tax deduction are not included unless you fold them into the purchase price.
  • Assumes annual upkeep is a flat average spread evenly across every year you own the desk.
  • Assumes resale value is a fixed share of the purchase price, recovered in full at the end of the ownership period, with no selling fees.
  • Assumes cost per working day counts only the days you enter; days you work elsewhere are not charged to the desk.
  • Does not attempt to value comfort, health or productivity; it measures cash only.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide by working days instead of calendar days?

A desk earns its keep on the days you use it. Dividing by working days gives a figure you can compare against other daily costs of a practice or office, such as a parking space or a software seat.

What resale value should I expect for a luxury desk?

It varies widely by maker, material and condition. Solid hardwood and well-known executive brands tend to hold value better than laminate or unbranded pieces, so start with a conservative figure and adjust after checking recent secondhand listings for the model you are considering.

Should I include the cost of a chair or accessories?

Only if you want a full workstation figure. The calculator is designed around the desk alone, but nothing stops you from adding a chair, monitor arm or lighting to the purchase price.
