Executive desks are bought by the inch and regretted by the foot. An 84 inch desk with a 36 inch depth looks proportionate on a showroom floor with nothing around it; in a 12 by 14 foot office it has to leave room for a chair to roll back, a person to stand behind it, and visitors to reach the guest chairs without turning sideways. Catalog dimensions never include that space, and it is the space that decides whether the room feels composed or crowded.

The planner converts your room to inches, adds your chosen chair clearance behind the desk and walkway clearance in front to the desk's depth, and adds one side path equal to the walkway clearance to its length. It tests the desk along both the longer and the shorter wall, reports whether it fits, how much of the floor it occupies, and the longest desk the room could hold with the same clearances. Columns, doors, radiators and built-ins reduce the usable room; measure the clear rectangle, not the wall-to-wall dimension.

How to use this tool

  1. Measure the clear rectangle of the office and enter it in feet.
  2. Enter the desk's length and depth in inches, including any attached return or a credenza you plan to place behind it.
  3. Set the chair and walkway clearances you want, then read the verdict, the floor share and the longest desk the room could take.

What the math assumes

  • Assumes the room is a clear rectangle; columns, door swings, radiators and built-ins should be subtracted from the dimensions you enter.
  • Assumes the desk needs your chair clearance behind it, your walkway clearance in front, and one side path as wide as the walkway clearance to get around it; the other end may sit near a wall.
  • Assumes a credenza or return is already included in the desk length or depth you enter; nothing is added automatically.
  • Assumes both orientations are acceptable; window placement, door position and which way you want to face are yours to judge.
  • Floor share compares the desk's top area alone with the room area and ignores every other piece of furniture.

Frequently asked questions

How much space should I leave behind an executive desk?

Enough to roll the chair fully back and stand up without touching the wall or credenza behind you. Large high-back executive chairs need more than task chairs, so measure your chair's depth and add the distance you push back when you stand.

Does the planner account for guest chairs in front of the desk?

Only through the walkway clearance. If you want two guest chairs and a path behind them, add the chair depth to the front clearance figure.

Can I use this for an L-shaped desk or a desk with a return?

Yes, if you enter the overall bounding dimensions, meaning the full length including the return and the full depth including it. The result will be conservative because the empty corner of the L is counted as desk.
