Sit-Stand Desk Height Range Fit Checker

Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.

Checks whether a sit-stand desk's published height range will actually reach your ideal sitting and standing heights, for tall, short and dress-shoe-wearing buyers who do not want to guess.

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

Every sit-stand desk publishes a height range, and every buyer assumes it will cover them. It often does not. A thick hardwood top raises the working surface above the frame's quoted number, a keyboard tray lowers it, dress shoes add an inch, and a tall executive standing at the top of a range designed around average height ends up hunching. Discovering this after a 9,000 USD desk has been delivered and installed is an expensive way to learn about body proportions.

The checker estimates your ideal sitting and standing desk heights from your height, using body-proportion ratios you can adjust, then adds your usual shoe heel. It compares those targets with the minimum and maximum heights of the desk you are considering, measured to the top of the work surface, and reports how much margin remains at the top of the range. Measure your own elbow heights with a tape if you can; a real measurement always beats a ratio.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your barefoot height and the heel height of your usual work shoes.
  2. Enter the desk's minimum and maximum height measured to the top of the work surface, adding the top thickness if the maker quotes frame height only.
  3. Read your ideal sitting and standing heights, the spare travel at the top, and the fit verdict; adjust the ratios if you have measured your own elbow heights.

What the math assumes

  • Assumes standing elbow height is 63 percent of your height and seated elbow height is 39 percent, both editable; they are common proportion estimates, not measurements of you.
  • Assumes the ideal desk height puts the work surface level with your elbows; keyboard trays, thick tops and a preference for a slightly lower surface are not modeled.
  • Assumes the desk heights you enter are measured to the top of the work surface, not to the frame.
  • Assumes the same shoes for sitting and standing and adds the heel height to both targets.
  • Does not account for monitor height, chair armrests or a footrest, all of which change the comfortable range.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a thick hardwood top matter for the height range?

Most makers quote the frame's travel range. A 1.5 or 2 inch solid top sits on that frame and raises both ends of the range, which helps tall users but can push the minimum above a shorter user's sitting height.

What if the verdict says the desk is too low for standing?

A shortfall under an inch is usually solved with a keyboard riser or thinner shoes. A larger gap means the frame is the wrong size class for you, and a taller frame or extended-range column is worth the premium.

How do I measure my elbow height instead of using the ratios?

Stand relaxed in your work shoes with your upper arm at your side and forearm level, then measure from the floor to the underside of your elbow. Repeat while seated with feet flat. Divide each by your height and enter the percentages.
